Why does the new Xbox 360 interface let me download my games from discs? Whats the point?

:D asked:

So in the new xbox 360 interface, if you press Y on a game in your console it has more options. One is to download the game to the hard drive. What is the point of doing that? You still need to put the disc in to play it off your hard drive. All of that just so the disc doesn’t need to spin?
